Title: “Journey with Ducklings: Discovering Animal Behaviors & Environments”

Age Group: Preschool / Pre-Primary / Nursery / Pre-Kindergarten (3-5 years old)

Learning Framework: Early Learning Outcomes Framework (ELOF) – USA

Educational Approach: Montessori Method

Learning Outcomes (Based on ELOF):

  1. Social and Emotional Development: Express feelings, needs, and opinions in difficult situations.
  2. Language and Literacy: Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
  3. Cognition: Engage in scientific inquiry to solve problems.
  4. Perceptual, Motor, and Physical Development: Coordinate movements to perform complex tasks.

Resources Needed:

  • The book “Make Way for Ducklings” by Robert McCloskey
  • Craft materials (construction paper, crayons, markers, scissors, glue, etc.)
  • Rubber ducklings or duckling figurines

Lesson Plan:

1. Introduction and Story Reading (20 minutes):

Introduce the book “Make Way for Ducklings” and read it aloud to the children. Discuss the story and engage students with questions about the ducklings and their journey.

2. Story Discussion (15 minutes):

Discuss the story focusing on the behaviors of the ducklings, their mother, and other characters. Ask the children to share their opinions about the actions of each character.

3. Ducklings’ Journey Mapping Activity (20 minutes):

Using a large piece of construction paper, help the children to draw a map of the ducklings’ journey as described in the story. Place the duckling figurines on the map and move them along the path to reinforce understanding of the story’s sequence.

4. “My Duckling” Craft Activity (25 minutes):

Provide craft materials for children to create their own duckling. As they work, encourage them to discuss their duckling’s journey and the environments it might encounter, promoting imaginative storytelling.

5. Story Reflection and Conclusion (20 minutes):

Recap the story and the ‘journey’ of the ducklings. Highlight how each duckling followed the mother and the importance of unity and perseverance.

Evaluate children’s understanding of the story, their ability to sequence the events, and their creativity in the craft activity.

Alignment with Montessori Method:

The lesson plan promotes self-directed, hands-on learning, independence, and exploration, aligning with the Montessori method. The activities encourage tactile learning and creativity, while the discussion nurtures emotional and social development.

Link to ELOF:

This lesson plan integrates several domains of the ELOF. Children develop language and literacy skills by exploring the text, use cognition in understanding the storyline and applying it to the mapping activity, and build social and emotional skills through discussion and reflection.
