  • The book “Make Way for Ducklings” by Robert McCloskey

Lesson Plan:

1. Introduction and Story Reading (20 minutes):

Introduce the book “Make Way for Ducklings” and read it aloud to the children. Discuss the story and engage students with questions about the ducklings and their journey.

2. Story Discussion (15 minutes):

Discuss the story focusing on the behaviors of the ducklings, their mother, and other characters. Ask the children to share their opinions about the actions of each character.

3. Ducklings’ Journey Mapping Activity (20 minutes):

Using a large piece of construction paper, help the children to draw a map of the ducklings’ journey as described in the story. Place the duckling figurines on the map and move them along the path to reinforce understanding of the story’s sequence.

4. “My Duckling” Craft Activity (25 minutes):

Provide craft materials for children to create their own duckling. As they work, encourage them to discuss their duckling’s journey and the environments it might encounter, promoting imaginative storytelling.

5. Story Reflection and Conclusion (20 minutes):

Recap the story and the ‘journey’ of the ducklings. Highlight how each duckling followed the mother and the importance of unity and perseverance.

Evaluate children’s understanding of the story, their ability to sequence the events, and their creativity in the craft activity.
