In January, the United Kingdom celebrates New Year’s Day and Burns Night. New Year’s Day is a public holiday celebrated on January 1st, marking the start of the new year. Burns Night is a celebration of the life and poetry of Scottish poet Robert Burns, held on January 25th. Preschool learning environments could be created around these events by incorporating traditional Scottish decorations and symbols, such as tartan patterns and thistles, into the classroom. Children could also learn about the history and traditions of New Year’s Day, including the significance of fireworks and resolutions. Potential preschool lesson plan ideas could include creating New Year’s resolutions with the children, teaching them traditional Scottish songs and dances, and introducing them to Scottish foods such as haggis and shortbread. Children could also create their own Scottish-inspired artwork and learn about the different types of poetry written by Robert Burns
