In June, Japan celebrates the Tanabata Festival, which is based on a Chinese legend about two lovers who are separated by the Milky Way and can only meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month. Additionally, June marks the start of the rainy season in Japan, known as Tsuyu. Preschool learning environments could be created around these events by incorporating traditional Japanese decorations such as origami paper cranes and colorful streamers. Teachers could also set up a sensory table with rice and chopsticks for children to practice using utensils and learn about Japanese cuisine. Potential preschool lesson plan ideas could include reading books about the Tanabata Festival and discussing the legend behind it. Children could also create their own paper decorations and write wishes on them to hang on a classroom tree. For the rainy season, teachers could lead discussions about weather patterns and the water cycle, as well as provide opportunities for children to explore rain through sensory play and experiments
