In November, India celebrates several major events including Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and Children’s Day. Diwali is a five-day festival that symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and is celebrated with fireworks, sweets, and the lighting of diyas (oil lamps). Children’s Day is celebrated on November 14th in honor of the birthday of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and is a day dedicated to promoting the welfare and rights of children. Preschool learning environments could be created around these events by incorporating traditional Indian decorations such as rangolis (colorful patterns made with colored powder) and diyas. Teachers could also introduce children to Indian culture through storytelling, music, and dance. For example, children could learn about the story of Diwali through a puppet show or participate in a dance workshop to learn traditional Indian dance moves. Potential preschool lesson plan ideas could include creating Diwali-themed art projects such as making paper lanterns or creating rangolis with colored sand. Children could also learn about Indian cuisine by making traditional sweets such as ladoos or barfis. For Children’s Day, teachers could lead discussions about the importance of children’s rights and encourage children to express their own ideas and opinions through art and writing activities. Overall, incorporating these events into the preschool curriculum can help children develop an appreciation for different cultures and traditions while also promoting creativity and critical thinking skills
