In October, the United States celebrates Columbus Day and Halloween. Columbus Day commemorates Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas in 1492, while Halloween is a holiday that originated from ancient Celtic traditions and is now celebrated with costumes, candy, and spooky decorations. Preschool learning environments for these events could include creating a “discovery” area for Columbus Day, where children can explore maps, globes, and other tools used for navigation. For Halloween, a “spooky” sensory table could be set up with items such as fake spider webs, plastic spiders, and slime for children to touch and explore. Potential preschool lesson plan ideas for Columbus Day could include reading books about Christopher Columbus and his journey, creating a “ship” out of cardboard boxes, and learning about different cultures and traditions. For Halloween, lesson plans could include making Halloween-themed crafts, learning about different Halloween traditions around the world, and practicing safety tips for trick-or-treating
