In September, the United States celebrates Labor Day, a national holiday that honors the contributions of workers to the country’s economy. Additionally, September 11th is a day of remembrance for the tragic terrorist attacks that occurred in 2001. Preschool learning environments could be created around these events by incorporating themes of community, hard work, and patriotism. For Labor Day, children could participate in activities that teach them about different jobs and the importance of teamwork. For September 11th, teachers could focus on promoting empathy and kindness towards others, as well as discussing the importance of safety and security. Potential preschool lesson plan ideas for Labor Day could include creating a classroom “job board” where children can take turns pretending to be different workers, such as a doctor, firefighter, or chef. For September 11th, teachers could read age-appropriate books about the event and encourage children to create artwork or write letters to first responders or military personnel as a way to show appreciation for their service
